Greg Peters

Greg Peters is both the director and key conservator of Patinations Conservation Services. He has been a dedicated furniture conservator and restorer for 16 years, and has worked with a diverse range of furniture styles and materials in Australia and abroad. Combining his working knowledge of traditional techniques and materials with more modern approaches to conservation, Greg continues to undertake a great deal of private historical and scientific research.

Greg has a practical and hands-on background in woodworking and cabinet making. His dedication to continued learning has been instrumental in the development of his professional reputation, as is recognised by his contemporaries in the field of conservation.

In 2000, Greg was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship which enabled him to travel to Europe to study and work alongside world-leading conservators from institutions and private workshops including The Royal Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Kunstgewerbe Museum in Berlin, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

In 2005, Greg was awarded an International Specialised Skills Scholarship to conduct further research into the preservation of clear coatings and finishes. This investigation involved collaborative work and discussion with conservators and scientists at the Smithsonian Centre for Materials Research and Education in Washington, the Winterthur Collection in Delaware, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Windsor Castle in England, as well as surface coating specialists in the United Kingdom and Finland.

Greg continues to expand his network of associates, collaborating on a number of projects with a broad range of professionals including conservators from all disciplines, museums and institutions. Their expertise complements and enhances Greg’s own skills and abilities allowing him to deliver successful outcomes.

Greg’s knowledge and experience has led to him being appointed to advise several heritage organisations. These include the ACT Historic Places Advisory Committee, the National Trust of Australia, The Australiana Fund and The Furniture History Society (Australasia).
