Oak CofferEnglish Carved Oak Coffer from Wenlock Abbey, Shropshire, 17th Century. Although its legs had been sawn off some time ago, probably as a result of rot or insect infestation, this highly carved coffer was in reasonable condition. To prevent future damage to the coffer, it was raised off the ground by a specially constructed plinth which supported the base boards and ensured the delicately carved edges were up out of harm’s way. The coffer had previously been damaged by mechanical impacts caused bxy broom and vacuum heads. |
