Conservation
“Stated simply, conservation of furniture and other artefacts is the synthesis of three major endeavours:- the minimization of deterioration (preservation), the consolidation (stabilization) of artefacts as they currently exist, and repair/replacement (compensation or restoration) of existing damage.” Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute
Rather than just ‘fix and repair’ furniture, professional furniture conservation relies on principles and guidelines to protect, preserve, and restore furniture to a standard that is universally accepted by the conservation profession.
Though a relatively new profession, furniture conservation owes much of its core practices to centuries of woodworking tradition and associated crafts and trades. Combining familiarity with these traditions and furniture history with a more modern approach to conservation using science and the latest innovative techniques, Patinations demonstrates versatility in its treatment and caters to the specific needs of every piece of furniture.
In consultation with our clients, Patinations practises minimal intervention, with the ultimate aim of maintaining the integrity of the piece, preserving its historic and monetary value, as well as its function and aesthetic value.
